The Korean government has expressed its interest in hosting the 18th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change scheduled for 2012
- The COP 18 will be very meaningful. By that time the Korean government will have set the future conditions for the national vision for green growth. In addition, the Post-2012 climate cooperation system established as the 1st public pledge period of the Kyoto Protocol will be over.
- Some 12,000 ~ 15,000 participants are expected from 192 nations, NGOs, and related international organizations.
The 18th COP is expected to agree on the goals for reducing greenhouse gas between the developed countries and the developing countries, as well as the volume and method of financial support for the developing countries and monitoring of reductions. The characteristics of new climate order will take shape and substantial actions to be taken will be agreed.
The host for the COP is determined by a consensus between related countries on the basis of an agreement by the Convention Secretariat that it be rotated among the five continents. The last event in Asia was in Indonesia in 2007. Since then it has been in Poland in 2008, Denmark in 2009, With Mexico in 2010, South Africa in 2011 and Asia again in 2012. So far Qatar is the only other applicant to host in 2012.
